About the 5 Days Serengeti Migration Safari
This itinerary is built specifically around the wildebeest migration — which means the route, camp positions, and driving plan all shift depending on when you're traveling.
The migration is not an event with a fixed date. It's a continuous movement of roughly 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, driven by rainfall and grass quality. In January and February, the southern Serengeti near Ndutu hosts the calving season — 500,000 calves born in six weeks, which draws the highest predator concentration we see all year. In July and August, the herds are in the north, and the Mara River crossings happen — wildebeest throwing themselves into crocodile-filled water in waves, the most dramatic wildlife event we know of.
Five days is the length we recommend for migration-focused trips because it gives you multiple consecutive mornings in the right area. One day near the herds is luck; five days with an experienced guide who knows the terrain is a very different proposition.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 5 Days Serengeti Migration Safari
Day 1 - Serengeti National Park (Central Seronera )
After breakfast, view the great migration on a morning game drive. Transfer to the Kogatende airstrip for a flight to Serengeti Central Seronera and arrive for the evening game drive to the camp for dinner and overnight.
River crossings at Kogatende occur daily in August as the mega herd settles into the area. In August, September and October, game viewing up here is superb, with river crossings guaranteed daily. There is no distinct movement as the herds tend to cross back and forth over the river, following the rains and subsequent fresh grasses. It is common to see different herds crossing in different directions on the same day.
Day 2 - Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, head out for a full-day game drive in Central Serengeti. Lunch will be prepared by your guide. Then, proceed with a game drive until the evening, when you will return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Today, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Masai Mara National Reserve across the border in Kenya, protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth. It is one of the last great migratory systems that are still intact. The Serengeti is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania's protected areas, which comprise 14% of the country's land area. This is a conservation record that few other countries can match.
Day 3 - Serengeti North - Kogatende Area
After breakfast, depart for a full-day game drive in Northern Serengeti (Kogatende area). You can view the great migration river crossing. Your guide will serve lunch, then continue with the game drive until evening. Check in to the camp for dinner and overnight.
A million wildebeest, each one driven by the same ancient rhythm, fulfilling its instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life - this is the great migration. A frenzied 3-week bout of territorial conquests, mating, and survival of the fittest as 40km-long (25 miles) columns plunge through crocodile-infested waters on the annual exodus north. They replenish the species in a brief population explosion that produces more than 8,000 calves daily before the 1,000km (600 miles) pilgrimage begins again.
Day 4 - Serengeti North - Kogatende Area
After breakfast, go on a full-day game drive in the Northern Serengeti (Kogatende area) to view the great migration. Your guide will serve lunch, and after that, you will proceed with the game drive. In the evening, return to the camp for dinner and overnight.
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, is also a World Heritage Site and was recently proclaimed a Seventh World Wonder. The Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some 6 million hooves pound the open plains as more than 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeests' trek for fresh grazing.
Day 5 - Serengeti North - Arusha
Breakfast at your camp is followed by a great morning game drive for your final chance to see the great migration and the river crossing. In the afternoon, transfer to Kogatende airstrip for your flight back to Arusha.
Explore the range of different habitats, including swamps, woodland, soda lakes and the world-famous Serengeti short grass plains. See great herds of wildebeest and zebra. Most of the wildebeest calves in a short time frame, around February, normally lasting about 3 weeks. The sea of grass provides little cover, and the young are easy pickings for a variety of predators.
