6 Days Marangu Route

Who Is This Route For?

Climbers who want Marangu's hut comfort but better summit chances than the 5-day version. The extra acclimatization day at Horombo makes a measurable difference to success rates.

What to Expect

The 6-day Marangu adds a full rest/acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m), giving your body an extra 24 hours to adjust before the summit push. Same route, huts, and trail as the 5-day.

Best Time to Climb

Year-round. Huts mean you're less affected by rain than camping routes. Peak season July–September sees the most traffic but also the best weather.

Starting Point

Marangu Gate to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), southeast approach. Moshi to gate: 45 minutes. The extra Horombo acclimatization day includes optional hikes to nearby viewpoints.

Why Choose This Route?

One extra day at Horombo significantly improves altitude adaptation and reduces AMS risk. The 6-day Marangu has a notably higher summit success rate than the 5-day (~60–65% vs ~45–50%).

Day-by-Day Summary

Day 1: Gate → Mandara (2,700m). Day 2: Mandara → Horombo (3,720m). Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo. Day 4: Horombo → Kibo (4,700m). Day 5: Summit push → Horombo. Day 6: Horombo → Gate.

Why Choose This 6 Day Tour

Rainforest Zone

Begin your trek through the lush rainforests at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. This area is rich with unique plant life, towering trees, and the chance to spot monkeys like the blue monkey and Colobus monkey.

Moorland and Heath Zones

As you ascend, the landscape changes dramatically from dense rainforest to open moorland, with giant heathers and unique vegetation like the giant groundsels and lobelias, providing striking views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.

Mawenzi and Kibo Views

Trekking past Horombo Hut, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s twin peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo, with rugged and scenic landscapes stretching out before you.

Kibo Hut

Located at the foot of Kibo, this high-altitude base camp is where you’ll prepare for the final summit push. The view of the mountain is dramatic from this point.

Summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters)

The most comprehensive highlight of the trek is reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Enjoy a genuinely rare sunrise at the summit, with views of the glaciers, crater rim, and expansive plains below.

Gillman’s Point

Before reaching the summit, trekkers pass Gillman’s Point on the crater rim, offering rewarding views and a sense of achievement.

Frequently Asked Questions

You don't need mountaineering experience, but you should be able to walk 5-8 hours on consecutive days. General aerobic fitness (running, hiking, cycling regularly) improves your chances. Altitude is the main factor, not strength — the key is pacing and proper acclimatization.

Park fees, national park camping or hut fees, a registered lead guide, assistant guides and porters (ratio of roughly 1:1 porter to climber), tents and camping equipment (if not a hut route), and all meals during the climb. Excluded: personal gear, tips, and pre/post-climb accommodation.

Sleeping bag, trekking poles, warm layers, waterproofs, and boots are personal items you should bring or rent locally in Moshi/Arusha. Good boots are critical — rental gear quality varies so we generally recommend bringing your own footwear if possible.

Longer routes give better acclimatization and higher success rates. The 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho are our top recommendations for most climbers. The 5-day Marangu is shorter but has a lower summit success rate because of the compressed schedule.

January–March and June–October are the main climbing seasons. January–March is drier in the lower zones though cold at altitude. June–October is dry and clear but cold at the summit (-15°C to -25°C at night is possible). Avoid April–May (heavy rain) if possible.
