Moshi vs Arusha: The Practical Difference
Both Arusha and Moshi serve as bases for Kilimanjaro climbs and northern Tanzania safaris, and both have hotels across all budget levels.
Arusha is Tanzania's "safari capital" — a larger, busier city with more restaurants, tour operators, and international hotel brands. It's the gateway to the Serengeti circuit and is 80km from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Moshi is smaller and quieter, directly at the base of Kilimanjaro (weather permitting, the mountain is visible from the streets). It's the preferred base for Kilimanjaro climbers, and our company operates from here.
Getting Between Arusha and Moshi
By Private Transfer
A private vehicle between the cities costs approximately $50–80 depending on the operator. Door-to-door, 1–1.5 hours. We can arrange this for clients.
By Shared Shuttle
Several shuttle companies run daily Arusha-Moshi routes for $8–15 per person. Journey time is approximately 1.5–2 hours including stops. Departure times are typically morning.
By Local Bus (Daladala)
Public minibuses (daladalas) run continuously between the bus stations in both cities for under $2. Journey time varies significantly with stops and traffic — budget 2–3 hours. Suitable for the budget-conscious traveler with time and patience.
Which City Should You Stay In?
Stay in Moshi if:
- Your trip includes a Kilimanjaro climb
- You want a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere
- You want proximity to Moshi-area day trips (waterfalls, Chemka, Maasai village)
- You're booking through a Moshi-based operator
Stay in Arusha if:
- Your trip is primarily a safari without climbing
- You prefer urban amenities and dining variety
- Your flight lands at or departs from Julius Nyerere International (Dar es Salaam) rather than KIA
For most clients who combine safari with Kilimanjaro, Moshi makes more sense as the central base.
