What Chemka Looks Like
Chemka's water is an extraordinary shade of translucent blue-green — the color comes from minerals in the volcanic groundwater, which is slightly warmer than the air temperature (roughly 28–30°C depending on season).
The pool is surrounded by dense tropical vegetation — fig trees with aerial roots hanging into the water, a canopy of banana, mango, and wild fig. The overall effect is genuinely lush and atmospheric in a way that photos consistently underrepresent.
The water is crystal clear to depth. Fish are visible at the bottom.
The Water: Temperature and Conditions
The spring maintains a consistent warm temperature year-round — warm enough to swim comfortably in any season, cooler than a hot tub, warmer than most river swimming in the area.
The current from the spring source is gentle at the entry point and negligible in the main pool. The water is clean and safe for swimming — it's fed by groundwater, not a river.
