Materuni is the best day trip from Moshi that most travelers haven't heard of — a 70-meter waterfall surrounded by dense rainforest on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, combined with a hands-on coffee farm experience.

Where Is Materuni and How Do You Get There?

Materuni village sits at about 1,700 meters on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, roughly 20km from Moshi town — about 45 minutes by road, passing through coffee and banana plantations as the road climbs into the forest zone.

The trip works as a half-day (leaving around 8am, returning by 1–2pm) or a relaxed full day. We pick you up from your accommodation in Moshi.

The Hike: What to Expect

The path from Materuni village to the falls is a 45-minute to 1-hour walk through dense cultivation and primary forest. The trail is well-maintained but involves some steep sections and can be muddy after rain.

Fitness level required: moderate. Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient — full hiking boots aren't necessary. The payoff-to-effort ratio is excellent.

The Coffee Experience: From Cherry to Cup

What makes the Materuni trip genuinely different from other waterfall hikes is the coffee farm component, guided by a Materuni community member.

The coffee tour walks you through the full Arabica coffee production process on a working farm — picking ripe coffee cherries by hand, the wet processing method (fermentation and washing), sun-drying on raised beds, hulling the dried beans by traditional wooden mortar, roasting over an open fire, grinding, and finally brewing using a traditional cloth filter.

The coffee you drink at the end was, an hour earlier, a cherry on a branch. For most travelers, this is their first genuinely clear understanding of where coffee comes from and how much labor it involves.
